After we had completed the sculpture but not yet found
a title, we came across a poem by the French poet
Saint-John Perse, which includes the lines
Birds, lances raised on every human frontier!
They go with the movements of things themselves,
riding the swell,
with the course of heavens . . .
(Saint-John Perse, Oiseaux XIII, 1962)
